In this post, we help you determine the right size air conditioner and the correct BTU on the AC unit you need to stay cool all summer long.
Why it is important to choose the right size
When it is time purchase a new air conditioner or central air system, you need to choose the right size AC unit that has the cooling capacity you need to keep your home cool.
If you choose one that is too small, it might not keep your home cool enough.
If you choose one that is too big, you’ll be running it inefficiently and spending way more money on your cooling costs than you need to.
Choosing the right size AC will keep you comfortable and save you money.
How do I know what size air conditioner I need?
To determine what the right size air conditioner is for your home, you need to calculate the size of the rooms served by the air conditioner, in square feet.
This will help you determine the cooling capacity you need.
Cooling capacity is measured in a unit called BTUs, which is short for British Thermal Units.
Calculate the size of the rooms
To calculate the size you will need to keep cool, multiply the length of the room (or the entire floorspace) by the width of the room or area to be cooled.
Length x Width = Square Feet
If a room is 12 feet by 14 feet, that means 12 x 14 = 168 square feet.
Then multiply that number by 25. This is the needed BTU per square foot to allow proper cooling.
Square Footage x 25
168 x 25 = 4200 BTU
That means for a 12×14 foot room, you need an air conditioner with a 4200 BTU cooling capacity.
